Andy Burnham won after Labour MP Josh Simons resigned specifically to create the vacancy, allowing Burnham to stand and challenge Keir Starmer for the Labour leadership from within Parliament — the first by-election triggered this way since the 1965 Leyton by-election. Burnham won 54.8% of the vote, increasing Labour's majority from 5,399 at the 2024 general election to 9,231.
