The UK's wildfire season is real, but it's a smaller part of a genuinely severe crisis across southern Europe. The EU's Joint Research Centre puts the continent-wide total at 434,976 hectares burnt since the start of 2026 as of 30 July \u2014 already above the equivalent point in 2025, which was itself the worst year on record. France's interior minister put that country's total at roughly 115,000 hectares burnt since January; Spain's prime minister said over 150,000 hectares had burned nationally by late July, around six times the area destroyed over the same period the year before.
The human toll has been real and serious. A fast-moving wildfire in Spain's Andalusia region killed at least 12 people on 10 July. In Greece, three firefighters died battling blazes that forced tourists and residents to flee parts of Crete, some evacuated by boat. More than 325,000 people have been evacuated from their homes across France and Spain combined, with tens of thousands more ordered to shelter in place.
The response has become genuinely international: Spain deployed over 2,700 personnel, hundreds of vehicles and 21 aircraft to fight fires straddling Madrid and Ávila, joined by crews sent from Greece, Italy and Portugal. In France, two people have been arrested on suspicion of arson connected to a large fire near Bordeaux \u2014 a reminder that while climate and weather set the conditions, individual fires still need an ignition source, accidental or deliberate.
Why this is happening
The same underlying weather pattern is driving both the UK and European crises. The UK has experienced repeated heatwaves through May, June and July 2026, with temperatures exceeding 34\u00b0C on multiple occasions; southern Europe has faced its own run of intense heatwaves on top of a deeper, longer-running drought. Experts have started using the term "firewave" in the UK context \u2014 not an official warning category, but a description of the wider pattern when several wildfires burn at once, particularly where grassland, heathland and moorland sit close to where people live. These landscapes dry out quickly in sustained heat, letting fire spread fast once it starts, and the same basic mechanism is at work in the Spanish and French countryside currently ablaze.
Drought has compounded the heat: five English regions were in official drought as of late July 2026, with six more experiencing prolonged dry weather, according to England's national drought group. That combination of heat, dry vegetation and low humidity is exactly the mix that lets fires start easily and spread quickly once alight.
This isn't just a one-off bad summer. Met Office research specifically attributed the UK's severe 2022 wildfire season to climate change, finding that human-caused warming made severe fire conditions at least six times more likely than they would have been otherwise. Researchers there are explicit that hotter, drier summers are becoming a persistent pattern rather than an anomaly, and that fires are an emerging, growing risk to people, property and ecosystems in the UK specifically \u2014 not just somewhere else.
Fire services themselves have raised a separate, real concern about capacity: the Fire Brigades Union has warned that funding cuts have left crews without enough resources to keep pace as wildfire incidents rise, pointing to incidents that have needed firefighters drawn in from several neighbouring services at once. That's a genuine resourcing question sitting alongside the climate one, not a substitute for it.
