Andy Burnham Becomes Prime Minister

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester since 2017 and a former Cabinet minister, announced on 24 January 2026 that he intended to seek a return to Parliament — a necessary step given he had resigned his Commons seat to become mayor. His initial attempt to stand in the Gorton and Denton by-election was blocked by Labour's National Executive Committee on 26 February.

He instead won the Makerfield by-election on 18 June 2026, returning to the Commons as an MP for the first time since 2017. Just four days later, on 22 June, Keir Starmer announced his resignation as Prime Minister and Labour leader. Following a nomination period in early July, Burnham was acclaimed as Labour leader on 17 July 2026, and is expected to be formally appointed Prime Minister today, 20 July 2026.
