2019 UK General Election

12 December 2019

Boris Johnson called a snap general election after months of parliamentary deadlock over how — or whether — to deliver Brexit, campaigning under the slogan "Get Brexit Done." The Conservative Party won a majority of 80 seats, its largest since 1987, while Labour under Jeremy Corbyn recorded its worst result since 1935.

Unlike the 2016 referendum, this was a result markets had substantially anticipated in the days beforehand, as polling consistently showed a Conservative lead. Even so, the scale of the majority removed a major source of uncertainty — the risk of continued hung-parliament gridlock or a no-deal Brexit forced through chaos rather than a clear mandate — and the pound rallied on the exit poll on election night, its sharpest single-night move in years, as markets priced in a swifter, calmer path to EU withdrawal.
