2024 UK General Election

4 July 2024

The Labour Party under Keir Starmer won a landslide victory, taking 411 seats to form a large majority government, ending 14 years of Conservative-led government. The Conservative Party was reduced to 121 seats — the worst result in the party's history.

Unlike several of the other events on this page, this was a result markets had anticipated for months — opinion polling had shown a consistent, large Labour lead throughout the campaign, and Starmer's Labour had spent the preceding two years positioning itself as fiscally cautious and business-friendly specifically to reassure markets ahead of any transition. As a result, the market reaction was comparatively muted: the pound moved only modestly around the result itself, reflecting that the outcome carried little genuine surprise.
