How this actually works
The £256.7bn figure covers health spending across all of the UK — England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland combined — principally funding the NHS in each nation, plus related public health and care spending. England's Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) budget alone, which mostly funds NHS England, was around £217bn for 2025/26. Since England makes up roughly 84% of the UK population, scaling that figure up to a UK-wide total lands very close to £256.7bn — the two numbers are consistent with each other once you account for the difference in scope, rather than contradicting one another.
