D-Day beaches of Normandy recognised as World Heritage sites in rare move
The D-Day beaches of Normandy have been recognised as Unesco World Heritage sites.
The beaches become the first Second World War battlefields to be granted the status by Unesco in a move that commemorates the soldiers who lost their lives.
Known by their Allied code names, Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, Sword and the Pointe du Hoc promontory, were recognised by the UN body at its meeting in South Korea on Sunday.
